A Low-Cost, Self-Governed Village for Unsheltered in Lewes
Why are we Tharros Village?
Tharros was an ancient city on the western coast of Sardinia, Italy. Founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BCE, it later became a flourishing Roman settlement. Though the city itself is now in ruins, it was once known for its resilience, trade, and strategic coastal location—very fitting for a place of renewal and rebuilding like Tharros Village.
In modern Greek, the word thárros translates to “courage”, “bravery’, or “grit. We celebrate the personal courage it takes for our residents to overcome adversity.
We also celebrate the community resilience through structure, self-governance, and hope.
It’s not just a name—it’s a story. One that says: “We honor the past, we face the present with courage, and we’re building toward a better future.”
Why Tharros Village Exists
In Sussex County, Delaware, the gap between affordable housing and available services continues to widen:
Emergency shelters are overwhelmed
Federal funding is shrinking
Local communities need solutions that work
Tharros Village offers a strategic response that aligns with county goals for affordable housing and sustainable land use.
We’re more than tents — we’re a cost-effective model that reduces public encampments, improves public health, and connects residents with case managers, health screenings, and job readiness resources.
What Sets Tharros Village Apart?
It’s not a shelter. It’s a transitional, self-governed village.
It’s not chaos. It’s structured, clean, and well-managed.
It’s not permanent. It’s a stepping stone to housing and independence.
